A dead battery is a major problem. Fortunately, it can be prevented by regular battery checks and maintenance. If you have a problem with your battery, your McGregor Chevy dealership can repair or replace it for you. These are a few signs that you need a new car battery from us.

Damaged Alternator

The alternator supplies electricity to your car’s systems and recharges your battery. A healthy alternator charges your battery at full power for ten minutes and then switches to charging at 10% of battery capacity until the battery is recharged. If your alternator is damaged, recharging will become problematic.

A damaged alternator will either not supply enough power to your battery or will overcharge the battery. If the power used by the battery isn’t replenished, the battery will run down. The other possibility is the alternator won’t switch to a lower recharging rate but will continue to charge the battery at full power. This will cause the electrolyte solution to boil. We’ll examine your alternator and replace it.

Bloated Battery Case

A swollen battery case is a sign your battery is failing. The battery case is made from tough plastic, and it’s designed to protect the contents of the battery from contamination. It also ensures that the chemicals in the battery, particularly sulfuric acid, don’t leak into your engine. If you examine your battery and it has bulges or looks distorted, we need to remove and replace it ASAP.

Bulges or bloating are caused by sustained extreme heat or cold conditions. A battery gets hot naturally as it stores electricity. Extreme temperatures increase the pressure inside the battery, and the electrolyte solution will expand. This solution has nowhere to go, so the pressure forces the casing walls outwards. A boated battery can’t be repaired, but we can install a new one for you.

Loose Connectors

A battery has two connectors that link it to the electrical system. One of the connectors is attached to the positive battery terminal, and the other is connected to the negative terminal. These connectors must be tightly secured, as electricity can’t pass through a gap. When you’re driving, these connectors can move slightly, and in time they could loosen.

A loose battery connection will cause immediate battery problems. Your battery won’t recharge efficiently, and it won’t be able to supply enough power to start your engine. This can result in starting difficulties, and eventually a dead battery. We’ll test the connections and secure them tightly again to fix this problem.

Not all battery problems require a battery replacement, but any problem will worsen as time passes. If you have a battery problem near McGregor, call us right away at Jim Tuner Chevrolet.
