Are you feeling a bit cooped up? Do you think the kids have been plugged in too long? It’s time to shake everyone out the door and spend some time out in the fresh air and sunshine. Grab the family and get outside at these local McGregor area parks.

Brazos Park East

Located along the Brazos River, this park has a lot to offer visitors. There are boat ramps to get you out on the water for some fishing or just floating around. If you enjoy playing horseshoes or Frisbee golf, Brazos Park East has you covered. The park also offers a pavilion and restrooms to help you make a day of it.

Enjoy the scenic views as you walk along the river on the walking trail. If you look closely, you may even spot some wildlife, such as turtles or birds. This beautiful park is located at 3516 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Waco.

Cameron Park

If you’d like to have the opportunity to take a hike, then Cameron Park may be the spot for you. There’s an extensive trail system of nature trails with varying intensity for hikers of all ages to enjoy. There’s even a paved path along the Brazos River for a scenic stroll. If you’re more into biking, Cameron Park has trails built just for bikes. While you’re there, check out Lover’s Leap and Jacob’s Ladder too.

Cameron Park also has a splash pad, playground equipment, and public restrooms, along with lots of spots for a picnic lunch. Plan to spend the day lounging on the grass, playing Frisbee golf, hiking the trails, and soaking up the views.

Kendrick Park

Another great park in Waco is Kendrick Park, located at 4011 Bagby Ave. You’ll find walking and biking trails, along with a football field and basketball courts. The kids will have endless fun hanging off the playground equipment, including two separate play areas, swings, and slides. Let the kids cool off in the splash pad while you relax on one of the many benches nearby. With a pavilion and picnic tables available, Kendrick Park is the perfect place for a picnic lunch as well.

Tonkawa Falls Park

Located in nearby Crawford, the Tonkawa Falls Park offers visitors a swimming hole when the water is high enough in the creek. Water levels fluctuate a lot, and when it’s low, you can see petroglyphs on the rocks made by the Tonkawa Indians hundreds of years ago. A 15-foot waterfall drops into the swimming hole, and visitors are asked not to jump from the cliffs into the water. The park also does not provide a lifeguard, so swimming is done at your own risk.

The park itself is located above the swimming hole and offers horseshoe pits, basketball courts, volleyball courts, picnic tables, and grills. Tonkawa Falls Park is definitely a place to plan to spend the day.

The kids may groan a bit when you tell them it’s time to get outside, but once you arrive at any one of these parks, smiles and laughter will replace the grumblings.
