The transmission is one of the hardest working systems in your car. It works continuously while your engine is running to supply the correct amount of energy to the wheels to allow them to move at the desired speed. As time passes, transmission components will wear out and require replacement. As you Chevy dealer, we’d like to know some signs that you need to visit us for a transmission service.

Signs You Need a Transmission Service at Your Chevy Dealer

Transmission Fluid Leak

Transmission fluid supplies the hydraulic power that enables the gears to shift. It’s pumped through the transmission and coats all the components with a friction-resistant covering. This is important, as many transmission components, like gears, depend on friction to work effectively and would be damaged without this fluid’s protection. It also helps to reduce the transmission temperature by cooling the hot components.

A leak is usually easy to spot, as transmission fluid is bright or dark red. If you spot a puddle of red fluid under your Chevy, we advise you don’t attempt to drive but call us right away. Driving with a leaking transmission can cause serious damage to transmission components, and the transmission could even seize up. We’ll trace the leak and seal it, then we’ll refill the transmission fluid.

Delayed Shifting

Your gears shift automatically on the instructions of the transmission computer to ensure your Chevy moves at the desired speed. There’s no sound when the gears shift, and you should only feel the increase or decrease in speed. If your transmission is healthy, the gears shift smoothly and effortlessly.

Delayed shifting is a situation where you feel a delay between when the transmission orders a gear shift and when the new gear engages. When its issue starts, the delay is slight, but it will increase and become noticeable as time passes. Fortunately, the main reason for this issue is a lack of transmission fluid. We’ll check for any leaks from the transmission, then refill the fluid, and gear shifting will work correctly again.

Burning Rubber Smell

If you smell the stench of burning rubber, your transmission could be in trouble. This awful smell is usually caused by overheated transmission fluid that has started burning. As we saw above, transmission fluid is vital for your transmission and needs to be changed regularly. Older fluid slows down and gradually loses its special properties. It also loses its heat resistance, and it can burn in the heat of the transmission.

Burning transmission fluid not only smells bad but also prevents the gears from shifting. Our technicians will drain the old fluid and then flush the transmission to remove any traces of the original fluid. We then reseal the transmission and replace the fluid.
