1. Amsler Park
You don’t have to travel far to McGregor’s very own Amsler Park. Located just off North Main Street, this small green space lets you take your dog for a walk along tree-lined paths and across the quaint bridges crossing the creek that meanders through it. If you’re heading out with the family, there are two kids’ playgrounds and a lovely pond where your little ones can feed the ducks.
2. Mother Neff State Park
A 15-minute drive southwest of McGregor brings you to Mother Neff State Park, situated along the Leon River. Here, you and your pooch can stroll along the six interconnecting paths that make up the park’s 3.5 miles of trailways. Wander through grasslands on the Prairie Loop or reach the crystal-clear waters of Wash Pond on a trail of the same name.
If you’re feeling adventurous, follow the Cave Trail to the Tonkawa rock shelter or the Tower Trail to the Civilian Conservation Corps rock tower. The latter will also lead you to the stone picnic table where you can both take a well-earned break.
3. Cotton Belt Trail
Less than 8.5 miles from the center of McGregor lies Cotton Belt Trail, a 2.5-mile walkway following the abandoned St. Louis Southwestern Railway. This scenic hike will take you and your dog from Trail Blazer Park to the outskirts of Waco, passing through open fields, below Old Lorena Road, and across the South Bosque River via an impressive bridge.
4. Hale Bopp and Highlander Loop
One of our favorites is the Hale Bopp and Highlander loop in Cameron Park to the north of Waco. This short 1.7-mile trail will give you and your pet a good workout as you navigate some challenging inclines. But, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views, as the path makes its way alongside the Bosque.
