This is history in the making. In response to a changing world that’s putting a stronger focus on electric energy, Chevrolet has confirmed that it’s coming out with an electric Silverado for the 2023 model year. This is what we know about this interesting development so far.

A New World of Pickups

Chevrolet is soon releasing its first-ever all-electric pickup, which they are calling the 2023 Silverado EV. The Silverado EV is going to be built at the same Michigan factory as the upcoming electric Hummer and other electric SUV models.

To be clear, the 2023 electric Silverado is not replacing the gasoline model. Instead, it will be sold alongside it as an available powertrain option.

Tough Power

One of the most interesting features the 2023 Silverado EV will offer is a four-wheel steering system. Rather than steer with only the front two wheels like conventional pickups, the Silverado EV will be able to steer with all four wheels at low and high speeds. This will give the Silverado EV a much tighter turning radius, which can be useful in many situations including trailering and maneuvering through tight spaces.

GM has released that the Silverado EV is slated to get up to a 400-mile driving range on a single, full charge. It’s still unknown what power options the Silverado EV will offer, but it’s generally thought that multiple battery-pack sizes will be available. If the Silverado takes cues from the Hummer, it will also make available single or multiple motor configurations.

Horsepower and torque information has not yet been released. But if the electric Hummer —  which will be the strongest Hummer to date — is a clue about the Silverado EV’s capabilities, we expect to not be disappointed by the truck’s strength.

The Future of GM Vehicles

GM and Chevrolet have pledged to become carbon neutral by 2040. GM has released that they plan on removing gasoline- and diesel-powered engines entirely by 2035. The Silverado EV is a sign that the manufacturer is making good on that promise. The electrified Silverado is also one of the 30 new electric models that GM is planning on releasing by 2025.

GM invested $2.2 billion into its Michigan assembly plant to prepare it to produce the wave of electric vehicles to come. As a part of this major overhaul, the factory was renamed Factory ZERO, inspired by the manufacturer’s vision for zero emissions, zero crashes, and zero congestion.

Release Date

Chevrolet hasn’t announced when the 2023 Silverado EV will be released yet. GM is releasing the Hummer EV in the fall of 2021 and more affordable versions sometime in 2022. It’s expected that the Silverado 2023 will be released shortly after the last of the 2022 Hummer EVs are released.
