Pile your kids in your Chevrolet Equinox, Trax, or Trailblazer for a fun day full of kid-friendly activities. Experience close animal encounters on a wildlife safari, camp under the stars, cool down at the aquatic center, and do something to help other less fortunate families.

1. Go on Safari at Blue Hills Ranch

Hop in a ranch safari vehicle and go for a drive across Blue Hills Ranch, searching for giraffes, zebras, camels, and bison roaming free on the prairie. Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos, wild mustangs, deer, donkeys, and horses.

Pop into the barn and meet the farm animals, experience a close and personal animal encounter, and swim with the otters. All the animal encounters and safaris are a private VIP experience and by appointment only. Blue Hills Ranch is at 2032 Blue Cut Road N. in McGregor.

2. Sleep Under the Stars in Mother Neff State Park

Load your camping gear in the trunk and the kids in the car, and take a short 15-minute drive to Mother Neff State Park for a camping adventure on the scenic Leon River. Pitch your tent at one of the full hookup campsites and enjoy cozy evenings under the stars around the campfire. You can hike down miles of trails through the prairie filled with wildflowers and explore the canyon trails from the campsite.

Drop by the Visitor Center with interactive displays and learn about the indigenous fauna and flora in the region and join a nature and history program hosted by the park’s rangers. Mother Neff State Park is at 1921 Park Road 14 in Moody and is open daily from 8 a.m. to  8 p.m.

3. Take a Splash in the Pool at the Amsler Park Aquatic Center

One of the best places to take the kids in summer is the Amsler Park Aquatic Center, where they can swim, dive, and splash around to their heart’s content to escape the heat. The Amsler Park Aquatic Center offers various aquatic programs, including swimming lessons and special events.

You can also play a game of disc golf with your kids on the 9-hole course and enjoy a family picnic together. Amsler Park Aquatic Center is at 110 Red Oak Road in McGregor and is open in the summer from Tuesdays to Thursdays from 12 to 5 p.m. The center closes at 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

4. Lend a Helping Hand to the McGregor Food Pantry

The McGregor Food Pantry has been helping to put food on the tables of countless needy families over the past 25 years. Currently, the Food Pantry serves an average of 75 families per month and distributes food to patrons on the last Sunday of each month between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. at 416 W. 2nd Street in McGregor.

Why don’t you and the kids pack a food bag from your own pantry or drive to the supermarket to buy a few products and donate them to the Food Pantry? You can drop your donation off at Irene’s Flowers and Gifts at 201 S. Main Street, The General Store at 1200 East, or the McGregor Chamber of Commerce office at 303 S. Main Street.
