3. The Carleen Bright Arboretum

The breathtaking 16-acre Carleen Bright Arboretum offers a tranquil retreat in magnificent gardens, including the award-winning cactus and impressive herb garden. It’s also a certified waystation for migrating monarch butterflies. Explore the beautiful surroundings by hiking or biking down the Todd Willis Nature Trail that winds through the woodlands.

Stroll to the koi pond and fountains, enjoy the beautiful view from the wooden gazebo, and relax in the shade of the Mexican maple, pecan, and live oak trees at Massey Meditation Grove.

The Carleen Bright Arboretum is at 9001 Bosque Boulevard in Woodway, 13 miles away. The gardens are open from dawn to dusk, and the Visitors Center opens Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

4. The Waco Mammoth National Monument

Thousands of years ago, enormous Columbian mammoths standing 14 feet tall and weighing 20,000 pounds roamed across Texas. At the Waco Mammoth National Monument, the remains of six of these incredible creatures can be seen from the elevated boardwalk above the excavated site. On the guided tour, you can learn more about the mammoths, the saber-toothed cat, the giant tortoise, and the Western camels found in the area.
