Damaged Radiator Cap
The radiator cap fits on top of the radiator and controls the temperature and pressure in the system. The cooling system operates under high pressure to ensure the coolant moves quickly through the system to remove heat. Heat generates pressure, and the hot coolant can raise the pressure in the system. If this happens, the radiator cap opens slightly to bleed off excess pressure and then closes again.
The cap must fit tightly to control the pressure, and the cap has two seals that ensure a perfect fit. In time, the heat and other conditions can crack or damage the seals, and coolant will leak out.
